T. Hadley Lewis and Frank J. Brown, two Quakers, founded it in 1895. They were on the lookout for a "promised land" in which to establish a colony of Friends or Quakers. Friendswood has risen to the top of Neighborhood Scout's list of the "Safest Cities in the United States." According to 2019 results, Friendswood is the second safest city in Texas and the 48th safest city in the nation. Friendswood, in Galveston County's northwest corner, holds the distinction of being Texas' only permanent town established as a Quaker colony.
